CMU Researchers Release Pangea-7B: A Fully Open Multimodal Large Language Models MLLMs for 39 Languages

Bridging Language and Cultural Gaps with PANGEA Recent advancements in AI have largely focused on English and Western content, leaving many languages and cultures underrepresented. This limits the effectiveness of AI in multilingual environments, which is essential as AI becomes more global. Introducing PANGEA PANGEA is a new multilingual AI model developed by a team from Carnegie Mellon University. It has been trained on a dataset called PANGEAINS, which includes 6 million instructions in 39 languages. This dataset combines high-quality English instructions with translations and culturally relevant tasks to improve its use across different cultures. Evaluation with PANGEABENCH The model’s performance is tested using PANGEABENCH, which consists of 14 datasets in 47 languages. PANGEA shows excellent performance, especially in multilingual situations, making it useful for various applications.
